Smile Design

You may have great teeth but you can still be unhappy with your smile, ‘Smile Design’ is exactly what it says, you choose the smile you want.

Do you want to look more confident, sporty or sexy?

Believe it or not their are scientific formulae for each, so your new smile can deliver any one of theses three core looks. The critical factor and major difference between ‘Smile Design’ at Archway Park Dental and other cosmetic dentists, is the way in which we consult and help you choose the right smile for you.

Not just a retouched picture...

Smile Design is about self esteem and we want to be 100% sure you are happy with the proposed treatment before it starts, this is why we model on you, not on a photograph using some smart software. That’s right, your cosmetic dentist will create a temporary version of your new smile in your mouth, just like the final version. This temporary model is then tweaked until you are absolutely happy with your new smile, so you get exactly what you want.

So what is the scientific formulae for a great smile?

Throughout the years people with a naturally beautiful smile have been analysed and categorised. Through research it has been identified that a person’s look was heavily influenced by their smile. It was found that there were three core ‘looks’ and these are confident, sporty and sexy.

What is a sexy smile?

Those people who were thought of as sexy had a smile with variation in the lengths of the teeth. This is because the central incisors tend to be longer than the other front teeth and wear down with age to an even length. So subconsciously we associate longer, more prominent central incisors with youth and "sexiness."

Therefore, in the "sexy" smile design, the central incisors are significantly longer than the lateral incisors. A sexy smile conveys youth and boldness, it can also convey warmth. A sexy smile design also draws the eye to the centre of the face, emphasizing the nose and chin. It especially suits people with prominent, attractive lips.

What makes a smile sophisticated?

Just as the sexy smile subconsciously communicates youth, the sophisticated smile conveys maturity and intelligence. It tends to emphasise the width of the lower face because the teeth appear as a straight horizontal line. This is because with age our teeth wear to even lengths and if someone has a great smile with teeth of even lengths, we associate it with maturity, wisdom, and 'sophistication'.

How can a smile be sporty?

Research has found that a sporty smile is one which conveys casualness, informality and warmth. It's not quite as serious as the sophisticated smile nor as young as the sexy smile. A sporty smile is between sophisticated and sexy, which means the central incisors are a little longer than the laterals.

Why is your facial shape important to your smile?

Which smile suits you most may be more about the shape of your face than any other factor. For example, a long face may need to accentuate width to appear more oval. Someone with attractive features in the centre of the face may need bold central incisors to draw attention to that centre. Whatever the shape of your face, our highly skilled and experienced cosmetic dentists will work with you to get the result you are looking for.

Do you have specific image aspirations?

How do you want to appear to others? A sophisticated smile gives the appearance of more intelligence, maturity and judgment. A sexy smile gives the appearance of more warmth, energy and boldness. How do you want to feel as a result of having your new smile?

If you want to turn back the years, a smile can help

Longer central incisors make you appear younger. Also, whiter teeth make you appear younger. Conversely, a flatter smile or a more subdued colour to the teeth make you appear more mature. The key is to create a look which is natural, in balance with your look and which doesn't stand out.

How can you discover what is most suitable for you?

Your face is unique, the look you desire will be as individual as you are and although there are predictable scientific formulae, the job of a cosmetic dentist is very different to those practicing in most general family practices. This is because, unlike most dentists who are driven by the technical aspects of their work, like fixing teeth, a cosmetic dentist must have a passion for the beautiful and for creating things.

To master the field of cosmetic dentistry requires extensive training beyond dental school. Archway Park Dental cosmetic dentists have this training and can demonstrate their skills by the work they do.

Their artistic sense means they interpret the end look you wish to achieve with your natural facial characteristics to give you a truly beautiful smile.

If you aren’t totally sure what look you are after, they can advise on the style which will best suit your look and aspirations. Plus with the Archway Park Dental, we actually ‘model your smile on you’ - so you can ‘try before you buy!’

What is temporary smile modelling?

During your initial smile design consultation, our expert cosmetic dentist will first seek to understand the look you really want. They will go over all of the factors which influence it, specific to your characteristics. This means you work with the dentist to design your perfect smile. Then, once agreed, they will create your new smile with temporary solutions (wax up models, temporary veneers, temporary crowns). Which means you can now try the proposed design in your own mouth. These temporaries can be modified to your exact requirements and the changes will be duplicated in the finished restorations.

So, the final decision is still yours and only when you are happy with your new smile does the permanent treatment start.
